Maybe it was her imagination, but over the course of the week the other girls were giggling an awful lot more than used to before she’d enter a room. Even more strangely, they would shut up quick after she did. There were whispers as well, just loud enough that Shannon could tell they were whispering but not loud enough to know what they were saying.

And she was growing ever more curious.

She escaped to Jorge’s room to discuss the matter with Jorge and Dom, both of whom had thus far gone undetected as lovers. Dom didn’t want to have to be the bearer of bad news, but she also wanted Shannon to know what was going on.

“There’s a rumor going around that you have something going on the side with the camera guy.”

Shannon sat back, stunned. “Mark?”

Dominique shrugged. She didn’t know his name. Quite frankly she was surprised that Shannon did. Mark, if that was his name, was a consummate professional. He stayed in the shadows like he was supposed to, unobtrusively capturing events without distracting them with his presence.

“One of the girls says she walked in on you guys together in your room–off camera if you know what I mean.”

Shannon quickly brushed it off. “That was nothing. I was having a bad day. He was just giving me a massage.”

Both Jorge and Dominique arched an eyebrow.

“Not like that,” Shannon corrected with a red face. “A foot massage. For my headache.” Their eyebrows practically arched off their faces. “Guys, it’s not like that. I’m not interested in Mark. I’m in love with Jake.”

Her voice trailed off. She had never quite admitted that to herself before.

That was when the tears came, because she knew that riding shotgun with that admission was almost certain heartbreak. No matter what she felt, Jake wasn’t in love with her.

For all the things she had been to him over the years, there was one very important thing she wasn’t–nor could she ever be.

She would never be Taylor.

“Oh, honey,” crooned Dominique as she reached out for her friend. Jorge took her hand.

“This wasn’t how it was supposed to work out,” she wailed. “It was supposed to be an act.”

“Life’s funny that way, sweetie,” Jorge told her. “Our hearts go where they want to go, not where we send them.”

“And who knows?” Dominique added. “Maybe Jake feels the same way about you.”

Shannon shook her head. That was one thing she did know. She knew that the minute he kissed Taylor. “He loves Taylor. Always has. Always will.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure,” Jorge said. “I mean, sure, he might be responding to these old feelings but take it from a guy. He’s dealing with new feelings, too.”

“How do you know?”

“It’s the way he looks at you,” Dominique answered for him. “He lights up whenever you enter a room. He doesn’t do that for anyone else. Even Taylor.” Shannon thought about that. Was that true? “And here’s what I know. I know that no matter what kind of chance you got, you have to go for it.
